Are you interested in planning a ski trip this winter but don’t know where to start? Do you typically plan vacations for your family but feel like a ski vacation is a whole different ball game? You’re not alone—and you’re in the right place.

At ALPINR [Backpacker Tours], we specialize in helping families of all sizes and budgets create unforgettable winter adventures. Whether you're looking for a luxury lodge, a cozy ski condo, or just the best value for your first time on the slopes, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

1. What Type of Traveler Are You?

There are ski resorts all over the world—in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and even Japan—and each destination has something special to offer. But not every resort is a perfect fit for every traveler. That’s why we help you narrow it down based on your travel style and budget.

  • Beginner-friendly resorts often have gentle terrain, top-rated ski schools, and      fun off-mountain activities like snow tubing or sleigh rides.

  • Budget-conscious families may prefer resorts with ski-in/walk-out condos and      full kitchens to save on dining costs.

  • If you’re looking for luxury lodging, there are resorts with spas, ski valets, and 5-star dining where you never have to leave the mountain.

2. When Should You Travel?

The ski season typically runs from late November through early April, depending on the resort and snow conditions. Holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day, and spring break are especially popular and tend to book up fast—so we recommend planning early for the best rates and availability.

If your dates are flexible, mid-January or early March can be great times to travel with fewer crowds and potential savings. And if you're a spontaneous type, let us know—we can check for last-minute ski deals that might be perfect for your family.

4. Ski Pass vs Resort Lift Tickets

This part can get a little confusing—but we’ll make it simple. Most ski resorts either accept multi-resort passes like Ikon Pass or Epic Pass, or they offer their own resort-specific lift tickets.

We’ll guide you through:

· Which pass offers the best value for your destination

· How many days you plan to ski

· Whether you’re eligible for discounted or kids-free lift tickets

· And we even have an Ikon Pass promo code for extra savings at select resorts!

5. Know the Ski Lingo

Skiing has its own language—but don’t worry, we’ll translate! Here are a few terms to know before you go:

· Ski-in/Ski-out: Lodging with direct access to the slopes. No shuttles or driving needed—just step outside and ski.

· Ski-in/Walk-out: You can ski back to your lodging, but you may need to walk or shuttle to get to the lifts in the morning.

· Bluebird Day: A sunny, clear day on the mountain—perfect for first-timers!

· Gondola/Lift/Chair: These are ways to get up the mountain. Gondolas are enclosed (great for kids); lifts and chairs are open-air.

· Green, Blue, Black Runs: These refer to trail difficulty. Green is easiest, blue is intermediate, and black is for advanced skiers.

We’ll make sure you understand all the basics so your family can feel comfortable and confident.

6. Ski Rentals: Delivery or In-Shop?

You don’t have to buy ski gear before your trip. Renting the equipment once you get in the resort is the easiest way to go. There is no need to lug your own gear around the airport if this is your first time skiing, or if you just take one or two ski trips per year. There are two main ways to rent ski gear:

· Delivery Rentals: A popular choice for families! Equipment is delivered right to your hotel or condo, and a tech will fit everyone at your convenience. Hassle-free and especially helpful if you arrive late or are traveling with kids.

· In-Shop Rentals: Typically more budget-friendly. You visit a local shop, get fitted, and pick up gear on the spot. Bonus: shops often have on-mountain locations for easy exchanges.

We’ll help you choose the best rental option based on your arrival time, budget, and resort amenities.

7. Ski Lessons: Why They’re Worth It

Even if you’ve skied once or twice, we always recommend lessons—especially for kids or first-timers. Resorts offer group and private lessons, and many have family lesson packages too.

Here’s why ski school is a game changer:

· Builds confidence and teaches safe technique from the start

· Helps prevent injury by learning the right way

· Gives parents a break while kids learn and have fun

· Some schools even include lift line priority, meaning less time waiting and more time skiing

No matter your age or ability, a ski lesson is the best way to start your trip on the right foot (or ski boot!).

8. Dress for Success: The Right Ski Gear & Clothing

One of the most common mistakes first-time skiers make? Wearing the wrong clothes on the mountain. Skiing is all about staying warm and dry—and that starts with what you wear underneath your jacket.

We always recommend dressing in layers:

· A base layer(top and bottom) made of wool or syntheticmaterial. Avoid cotton—it holds moisture, gets wet, and will make you cold fast.

· An insulating mid-layer like a fleece or light down jacket.

· A waterproof outer layer (your ski jacket and pants).

And don’t forget the accessories: ski gloves or mittens, neck gaiter, goggles, helmet, and wool socks (just one pair!). These little things make a big difference in your comfort and confidence on the slopes.

To make things easier, all Backpacker Tours clients get access to our exclusive skier’s packing checklist—so you’ll know exactly what to bring. Plus, our travelers receive 15% off ski gear and apparel at The Backpacker, whether you're buying new or upgrading your basics.

Need help deciding what to rent and what to buy? We’ve got you covered with personalized advice based on your destination, budget, and family needs.
